Rückenlage / Upside Down interprets the personal story of Rudolf Hess’s mysterious flight to Scotland in 1941. The Deputy Führer of the Third Reich unexpectedly flew to Scotland claiming he wanted to ‘negotiate peace.’ Narrated through his many letters to his family, we hear his motivations, thoughts and feelings about the flight. While trying to change the course of history, Hess only managed to change his own completely, and he spent the rest of his life in prison until his death in 1987.
The film is a visual journey through Scotland’s skies. It is also a journey through the mind of Hess and his romantic ideas about his failed mission.
